CROWN POINT – Lake County Auditor John Petalas is offering tax breaks to new home buyers and there are no long lines – if they arrive soon.

Petalas said anyone who bought a new home in the first half of this year should file their claim for property and mortgage deductions before the end of this month to receive lower taxes in the coming year.

“These deductions can cut your future taxes by about half,” Petalas said.

This episode of the “Riding Shotgun with NWI Cops” series takes viewers amid flames and smoke with local firefighters.

Those who bought new homes in the second half of the year should first call the office’s Tax Deductions department at 755-3120 to find out if they need to file this month or if they have more time to do it.

Those due to file this month can come to his office this week from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at 2293 N. Main St., Crown Point, to file an exemption request offered by the State.

His office will be closed on Christmas Eve, December 27 and New Year’s Day, but open the other days of the week.

He said there was little to no wait at his office’s tax deductions department this week. “But if people wait until the last week of the year, the line will be at the front door,” he warned.

New owners can also file claims for deductions by mail or online at: legacy.lakecountyin.org/portal/media-type/html/group/auditor/page/file-exemptions.
